Strength Training

Strength training is a must for triathletes. In order to power through your swim, your cycle, and your run you have to build strength in your arms and legs.
Thus, we have a basic recommended strength workout that builds up over time and includes “active rest” weeks to allow you to recover periodically from extensive effort. Our particular strength workout is not required. You are certainly welcome to substitute your own. It, to an extent, might require access to a weight room to complete.
Alternately, for those of you who own a Wii, there are some great workouts through Wii Fit and Wii Active that could aide you in building strength for the triathlon without hitting the weight room. If you have a Wii Fit do a full session of Yoga 2 times per week and add a full session of all the strength exercises 2 times per week (at lowest repetition to start) as well. After about a month…build up by adding repetitions to all of your the strength workouts. The core and strength workouts you do during training will go a long way toward getting you in the best shape of your life and helping you to complete for the event.
If you have not heard of Wii Active….this is another Wii exercise program that is much more challenging than Wii Fit. This program has a “30 day challenge” of 4 weeks of 5 day per week workouts. The 20 basic workouts have easy, moderate and hard levels. If you start at the “easy” level, doing 3 workouts per week you should advance through the “hard” level by the time we reach triathlon day. These are challenging workouts that offer a wonderful variety of strength and cardio work that will keep you from getting bored over the next several months. Plus you can do these workouts at home. In addition, you won’t need a balance board for these workouts like you would with Wii Fit.
If you would like to design your own strength workout that you can do at home a great resources is a book called “You Are Your Own Gym” by Mark Lauren. You can purchase this book for only $12.95 at this website http://www.marklauren.com/
